What Are the Benefits of Using Cryotherapy to Treat Injury?
Using cryotherapy to treat injury can produce a number of benefits. These include:
- Immediate pain relief
- Improves circulation throughout affected area
- Reduces swelling and inflammation
- Better joint mobility
- Reduces fatigue
- Speeds up recovery
What Size Should I Choose?
The Aircast Knee/Elbow Cryo/Cuff is available in a single standard size that should fit most children between the ages of one and seven.
Which Cooler Unit Should I Choose?
The Aircast Cryo/Cuff system can be used with either one of two cooler units depending on your child’s needs. Both cooler units offer six to eight hours of gravity-fed compression therapy, but differ in the amount of compression therapy they can provide. The two cooler units are:
- Aircast Standard Cold Therapy Cooler – Standard gravity-fed cooler unit to provide constant compression and cold therapy
- Aircast Automatic Cold Therapy IC Cooler – Same cooler unit, but powered with a pump to provide intermittent compression therapy, resulting in improved circulation through the affected area
How Do I Use the Cryo/Cuff?
To understand how to prepare, apply and use the Cryo/Cuff, follow these four simple steps:
Step One: Prepare the Cooler
Connect the blue tube to the cooler and fill the cooler to the line with water. Add ice and rest the insulation disk on top before closing the cooler shut. Allow up to five minutes for the water to chill before use.
Step Two: Apply the Cuff
Position the cuff on either the knee or elbow with the quick disconnect valve pointing upwards. (See figure 1).
Slightly flex the knee or elbow to allow mobility and secure using the straps provided. Tighten the straps according to your child’s comfort. (See figure 2).
Step Three: Fill the Cuff
Connect the blue tube to the cuff and open the cooler air vent located on the cooler lid. Lift the cooler so that it is approximately fifteen inches above the level of the cuff. Hold the cooler in this position for about thirty seconds until the cuff is full. (See figure 3).
Close the air vent and disconnect the cuff by pressing the metal tab.
Step Four: Rechill Water
To rechill the water between uses, reconnect the blue tube to the cuff and position the cooler so that it is beneath the level of the cuff. This will allow the water to drain from the cuff, back into the cooler. Allow up to two minutes for the water to chill before repeating treatment.
For more information on how to use the Cryo/Cuff, please see the manual below:
- User Instruction Manual
How Long Can I Use the Cryo/Cuff for with Each Treatment?
You can use the Cryo/Cuff for up to two hours per therapy session. It is recommended that you give a period of at least twenty minutes cessation between uses.
Use Skin Protection While Using the Cryo/Cuff
At no point during treatment should the skin be in direct contact with the Cryo/Cuff. It is vital that you wrap the affected area with a cloth or bandage to create a bridge between the skin and the cuff to avoid risk of skin burn.
How Do I Clean the Cuff?
To clean the cuff, handwash with a mild detergent and hot water before rinsing and leaving to air dry. This process can be used to clean both the blue tube and cooler units also.
